Nurse Licensure Compact · Massachusetts · 2026
Is Massachusetts a compact state for nurses?
Enacted, not implemented · verified September 21, 2026
Enacted — but Massachusetts has not implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Massachusetts single-state license by endorsement
- Set by the state board
Massachusetts has enacted the NLC. Enacted; the official table lists the implementation date as to be determined. A multistate license is not issued in Massachusetts and a multistate license from another state does not authorize practice there until implementation is complete. To practice in Massachusetts today, a nurse needs a Massachusetts license from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Massachusetts single-state license by endorsement
Set by the state boardApply to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing for a Massachusetts-only RN or LPN/VN license: the route for nurses whose primary state of residence is not an implemented NLC state, and for practice into any state outside the compact — telehealth included, because a nurse must be licensed where the patient is.

Massachusetts Nurse Licensure Compact FAQ
Is Massachusetts a compact state for nurses?
Not for practice. Massachusetts enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact, but the official NLC table lists its implementation date as to be determined, and enactment alone does not issue or honor a multistate license.
Can I work in Massachusetts on a multistate license from another state?
Not until Massachusetts implements the compact. The official table marks Massachusetts as not yet honoring compact licenses, so a Massachusetts single-state license is the route today.
I live in Massachusetts. Can I get a multistate license?
Not from Massachusetts while implementation is pending, and not from any other state either: a multistate license is issued only by the primary state of residence. Track the official NLC table for the implementation date.
